When the weekend rolls around, those casual outfits are just calling my name. Well, who am I kidding, they’re always calling my name! In the winter, I love nothing more than throwing on a comfy, over-sized sweater, my mom jeans and just calling it a day. It’s the perfect combo for running errands or grabbing that spontaneous coffee or brunch with friends.
More and more I seem to gravitate toward clothing that’s comfortable versus something that leaves me with those thoughts of “I can’t wait to get home so that I can change out of this!”. Maybe I’ve grown lazy in my old age, I am almost thirty, or maybe the idea that fashion can be comfortable has grown in popularity. Seriously, who would’ve thought that wearing pajamas as part of your outfit would ever be considered fashionable? Since comfort has been calling my name lately, I wanted to share how I like to create a casual weekend look in winter that keeps me comfortable and looking totally stylish– the three piece rule!
There is a fine art you when it comes to creating a casual weekend look during the winter that feels laid back, yet still screams fashionista. When putting together a casual outfit, or any outfit, I like to follow the Third Piece Rule. With this rule, your top and your pants act as the first and second pieces, then you go on to add a third piece to your look like a jacket, scarf, or even a statement necklace to create an outfit.
I’m sure that you’ve seen the three piece rule applied to outfits and not even realized. Think of the athletic wear trend that’s been happening lately! Women can wear a cute third piece like a leather or bomber jacket over their workout clothes that takes them from “just at the gym” to “street chic” and leaves you wondering how they look so cool. It’s all the work of that miracle working third piece–totally genius!!
The Third Piece Rule is incredibly easy to implement when it comes to your weekend look this winter because it includes all kinds of things you most likely own and wear already. I love that you can be totally creative and put together an entirely different look depending on what Third Piece you choose. If you’re feeling fierce, you can even add a fourth piece like a belt or hat! This is my favorite way to stay incredibly comfy, yet bring an air of sophistication to a casual weekend outfit.
For my look, I implemented the three piece rule by adding my oversized blazer to layer over my cozy pink sweater. I’ve had this blazer for ages and I wear it all of the time! It’s probably one of my best purchases and I only spent like $2 on it at the thrift store. You can also see how I style it with my plaid skirt. My sweater is from an adorable boutique in Berlin that I discovered during my travels back in September. The weather decided to rudely change from summer to autumn on my adventure and I only packed for summer temps, so I was desperate for something warm to wear. I went ahead and added a fourth piece to my outfit by accessorizing with a choker necklace. My red lip acts as a cute little fifth piece : )

I hope that the three piece rule helps you if you’re ever feeling a bit stumped when you look at your outfit in the mirror and think, “my outfit needs something!”. Now you know it may just need a third piece to complete it. Do you ever use the three piece rule when styling your outfits?
