12 Things I Learned In My 20’s

After a much needed break, I’m back to blogging! I feel inspired and ready to get back to it. I’m also excited to reconnect with you all and share about life again. I find that it’s always nice to take a step back and rest, so that you can continue to do what you love. So much has happened since I’ve been away- some good and some not so good- but one really exciting and terrifying thing that happened was I turned THIRTY in May!! I still have to pinch myself when I say it because I can’t really believe it happened.

It didn’t feel real when I first started saying it, but now I’m finally starting to feel like I’m thirty. Everyone keeps telling me how amazing your thirties are; I’m looking forward to experiencing this new decade, even though I’m still a bit terrified of it! Moving forward into my thirties, I couldn’t help but reflect on some of the things I learned in my twenties: brilliant insight, lessons I learned a little too late, all things serious and silly, happy and sad, practical and completely useless! So, I thought it’d be fun to share some. Here are 12 things I learned in my 20’s!

1. When People Say You Look Young, Smile And Tell Them Thank You!

I’ve been blessed, or I used to think cursed, with always looking younger than I am. I blame my petite frame and angelic face! People are shocked when they find out that I’m not twenty-one. It used to really bother me, but over the years, I’ve come to love it. Most of the world is actively trying to stop the aging process, so I’m embracing my youthful looks while I have them.

2. Make Travel A Priority

I don’t know who I’d be today without travel! Travel has greatly influenced my life and helped shape me as a person. Every time I explore a new place, I come away with a fresh view on life, an appreciation for this amazing world around me, and the people who make it that way. Take every opportunity to explore the world around you!! Maybe it’s a day trip to a familiar spot or an escape to a foreign land, but wherever you go, the experiences and memories you gain can never be taken away. The more I travel, the more it fuels my desire to see more of the world!

3. Dry Shampoo Is Everything

It’s absolutely genius. Growing up, I was always told to wash my hair everyday, which is horrible for your hair (thanks Mom). Now, I just like to pretend I have clean hair *cue miracle in a can*. Who even has the time to wash their hair every day?!

4. The Path Life Takes You On Will Look Different Than What You “Planned” And That’s Okay!

Looking back, I feel a mixture of emotions about the journey life has taken me on. I feel like some things were missed opportunities in life, lots of things that I’m SO glad I left behind in the dust, and then there are things that happened that were just completely out of my control. That’s the ironic thing about looking back: you can see things with such clarity. For me, one of those things was being married by twenty-five, and well on my way to my dream of four kids by the time I was thirty. SO Crazy! Obviously, that didn’t happen.  Instead, I’ve traveled the world, lived in another country, and had the chance to pursue dreams and opportunities. All of those things would’ve been hard- I won’t say impossible- to pursue if life had gone according to my plan. I know myself so much better now at thirty than I did at twenty and I’m excited to see where life takes me next. I should probably also mention that a quarter life crisis is REAL, so be prepared!!

5. Never Stop Trying New Things

Never lose your sense of adventure! We can get into such a routine as we get older. Life just gets busy with work, family, bills, and a thousand other things that make it easy for adventure to get put on the back burner. I was beginning to get stuck in the routine of life, so I made a New Year’s resolution one year to “try new things” to keep it actively on my mind. Since then, I’ve taken up climbing, started Crossfit, attempted yoga, moved to London, tried the online dating thing, started a blog, become a whiskey lover, and loads of other things. What’s life without adventure and trying new things? You may find something that you really love.

6. Grey Hair Is Coming!

I feel like I’m saying the Game of Thrones line, “Winter is coming!” Ha ha! Just prepare yourself for the inevitable. I was chatting on the phone when I found my first one a few years ago, and I screamed! I quickly snapped a pic to send to my friend, and she just laughed at me- so rude. I actually came across the photo the other week which was like a terrifying walk down memory lane!

7. Take Care Of The Skin You’re In

Your skin is precious and will reflect how you treat it as you age. My mom instilled in me the value of caring for my skin from a young age- like putting sunscreen on everyday and getting facials. I’m incredibly thankful for that now! My skin is really far from perfect, since I still struggle with acne *tear*; and I would’ve cried if you told teenage me that I’d still be dealing with this at thirty! Recently, words like “anti-aging” and “where’s my hat?” have been coming out of my mouth.

8. Chocolate Makes Everything Better!

I think that I learned this one way before my twenties, but that doesn’t make it any less true. A square of dark chocolate before bed and a sip of hot cocoa when it’s cold out never ceases to lift my spirits, and make my day a thousand times better.

9. Never Settle

I know that it’s easier said than done, but never let fear keep you from doing something that you’ve been dreaming of doing. Don’t allow the feeling of being comfortable keep you in an unhealthy place, even just a stagnant place, in life. Whether that’s with your career, relationships, being healthy, etc. “You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” A. A. Milne

10. Coconut Oil Is A Beauty Wonder

If I could bring one “beauty product” with me on a desert island, it would be coconut oil! Not only can you cook with it, but it’s basically an all in one beauty product. It’s my eye makeup remover, moisturizer/ lotion, shaving cream, and I also use it when I’m oil pulling. We have a pretty great relationship, and I plan on keeping it that way : )

11. Body Confidence Is Always A Work In Progress

There are parts of my body that I love more now than I did in my early twenties- hello bootaaay. Then, there are other parts that I feel totally self conscious of- like my stomach *blah*- that used to be my pride and joy. That will all continue to change, for better or worse, based on a hundred different factors, but I can definitely say that I’m more comfortable in my own skin now more than ever before. It really all comes down to knowing your value isn’t based on your appearance and believing that you have more to offer than what can be seen from just a glance at your body.

12. Everyone Can Teach You Something, So Be Teachable

I have learned incredible things from people; much of it being from individuals I would’ve never expected. No matter how much we think we know, there’s always going to be someone who knows more than you. Instead of letting it make you feel insecure about what you’re lacking, learn from them. Let it fuel you to become better. Surround yourself with people who are ahead of you in the game and are where you want to be. Everything isn’t a competition.

What’s something you learned in your 20’s?

It’s wonderful to be back! Here’s to being thirty, flirty, and thriving! A little movie reference for you all ; )

These are all great lessons! I’m constantly getting told that I look young so I find it as a compliment! When I get older, I’m going to want people to think I look young haha

    • Meaghan Gonzalez on July 30, 2017 at 9:05 am

Thank you Linda! Yes, I was finally like, wait a second, I’d rather be told I look young than the alternative! All about perspective : )

It’s the worst!! I have one in my bangs, so I have to make sure its hidden. Everyone tells me to pluck them, but I think it’d be worse to have them sticking straight up when they grow back in. Yikes! Thanks for reading Laura xx

    • Meaghan Gonzalez on July 30, 2017 at 9:42 am

OMG the grey hair! I keep finding random hairs that are turning grey. Not okay! I guess I learned to color my hair in my 30’s haha

    • Meaghan Gonzalez on July 30, 2017 at 9:54 am

It’s so horrific when you find one! I’m sure there are tons that are just waiting to stage a surprise attack on me haha. I really love my hair color, I think I’ll cry when the day comes to color it. I’ll need lots of moral support! Thanks for reading xx

So many great tips! People always think I’m younger than I am which can get frustrating because I don’t want to feel discredited for the great work I do just because of my age! I’m also obsessed with your shoes. So cute.

    • Meaghan Gonzalez on July 30, 2017 at 10:10 am

I totally understand that! It used to really upset me when people assumed I was younger and would treat me differently because of it. Totally frustrating! I hope that you can come to love your youthful beauty. And thanks for the shoe love, they’re some of my faves!!
